A Custom Tiered Pool Designed for a Tucson Backyard

Rather than taking a traditional single-level approach, this custom Tucson pool was designed around a tiered layout that gives the backyard greater dimension and visual interest.

Multiple elevations help define the different areas of the pool while allowing the spa, water features, and surrounding hardscape to work together as one cohesive design.

The result is a backyard that feels less like a conventional swimming pool installation and more like a complete outdoor environment.

A Pool Design Built Around Water

Water is one of the defining elements of this project.

In addition to the swimming pool itself, the design incorporates an integrated spa and multiple water features, including a dramatic rain curtain.

The rain curtain creates a continuous sheet of falling water that becomes a focal point within the backyard. In addition to its visual impact, the sound and movement of the water add another dimension to the overall pool experience.

The combination of the tiered pool design and moving water gives this Tucson backyard a distinctive resort-inspired character.

Fire & Water Features

One of the most distinctive elements of this Tucson pool design is the combination of fire and water. Elevated fire features create dramatic focal points across the tiered pool while complementing the movement of the rain curtain and other water features. Together, the contrasting elements of fire and water give the backyard a resort-inspired atmosphere and make the pool especially striking in the evening.

Integrated Spa & Baja Shelf

An integrated spa was incorporated directly into the overall pool design, creating a dedicated area for relaxation while maintaining the visual continuity of the project.

The pool also features a Baja shelf, providing a shallow area for lounging and relaxing in the water.

These elements allow different parts of the pool to serve different purposes while remaining part of a single custom design.

Limestone Pool Decking

Limestone decking surrounds the pool and helps create the project’s clean, upscale appearance.

The natural character of limestone works especially well with the architecture and desert environment found throughout Southern Arizona. Its subtle variations provide visual texture without competing with the pool itself.

For this project, the limestone also helps visually connect the different elevations and features throughout the backyard.

StoneScapes Mini Pebble Interior Finish

The interior of the pool was finished with StoneScapes Mini Pebble, giving the water a rich, natural appearance while complementing the limestone surrounding the pool.

Pebble finishes are a popular choice for custom gunite pools because they combine durability with a more natural aesthetic than a traditional smooth plaster finish.

The combination of the StoneScapes interior, limestone decking, and water features helps give the completed pool a cohesive high-end appearance.

Designed by Devin Ramsey

The pool was designed by Devin Ramsey of 1st Choice Pools Building & Design.

The tiered configuration required the individual elements of the backyard—the pool, spa, Baja shelf, rain curtain, water features, and decking—to feel like parts of one intentional design rather than separate additions.

That attention to the relationship between each feature is what gives the completed project its distinctive appearance.

From Design to Completed Pool

From the initial design through construction and final startup, this new Tucson pool project took approximately eight months to complete.

Our pool installation process in Tucson involves multiple stages, including design, engineering and permitting, excavation, plumbing, steel, gunite, tile and finish work, decking, equipment installation, interior finishing, and final pool startup.

The finished project brought those individual stages together into a custom backyard designed specifically for the property.

The Finished Tucson Backyard

The completed pool combines several of the most requested features in today’s custom pool designs while maintaining its own distinctive character.

The tiered layout establishes the foundation of the design, while the integrated spa and Baja shelf add functionality. Limestone decking and the StoneScapes Mini Pebble interior provide the finishing materials, while the rain curtain, water features, and elevated fire features create the project’s signature visual impact.

Together, these details created a custom pool and outdoor environment built specifically for this Tucson home.
